Meadows House | Cheshire Interior Design Project

Designing a home from thousands of miles away is not the usual way an interior design project comes together, but it is exactly how this four-bedroom house in Chester took shape. The owners first got in touch while living abroad, and they remained abroad for the full length of the project. Every decision, from paint colours and flooring to furniture, lighting and the smallest finishing touches, was discussed, chosen and approved remotely, all with one goal in mind: that the house would be completely finished and ready for them the moment they returned home to Cheshire.

It is a project that shows what is possible when trust and clear communication sit at the centre of a design relationship. Rather than waiting for the clients to be present for every decision, the design team worked from detailed conversations, mood boards and regular updates, translating what the family wanted into a home that feels personal and considered, not generic or rushed.

At the centre of the house is a bright, open plan kitchen, dining and living space that looks directly out over the garden. Full height sheer curtains hang the width of the windows and doors, and rather than closing the room off, they work with the light, softening it as it moves through the fabric and spreading it evenly across the space. In the mornings, the room fills with a gentle, almost hazy glow, and as the sun moves round, the curtains keep the space feeling calm and glare free without ever losing the sense of connection to the garden outside. It is a simple design choice, but one that changes how the whole room feels throughout the day, letting natural light in generously while still giving the family privacy and comfort.

Elsewhere on the ground floor, a formal lounge is built around a wood burning stove, set into a tiled surround with a stacked log store beside it, giving the room an immediate sense of warmth and permanence, somewhere for the family to gather on cooler evenings. A separate snug offers a quieter alternative, designed as a relaxed, everyday space with a wall mounted television and a dedicated reading corner, complete with soft furnishings, layered textures and warm accent colours that make it feel cosy rather than formal.

Upstairs, the bedrooms each have their own distinct identity while staying connected through a shared, considered palette. Some rooms lean into soft neutrals, with faux fur throws, tactile cushions and warm lighting for a calm, hotel-like feel, while others introduce colour and personality, from deep jewel-toned cushions to brass wall lights and playful artwork, giving every member of the family a space that feels like their own.

Every part of the house, from the open plan living areas to the bedrooms, dressing spaces and quiet corners, was planned around how the family actually lives, not just how it would photograph. The result is a home in Chester that feels warm, layered and entirely finished, ready to be lived in from the very first day the owners walked back through the door.
