Is It Worth Hiring an Interior Designer in Cheshire? An Honest Answer

By Hada Interiors — Interior Designer based in Chester, Cheshire There is a moment most Cheshire homeowners recognise. You have been living with the same tired kitchen layout for three years. You know you want change. You have a rough idea of what you like. But every time you try to make a decision, every time you get close to committing to something, the whole project starts to feel overwhelming and very easy to postpone for another six months.
At this point, many people wonder: would an interior designer actually help? Or is it an unnecessary expense on top of everything else a renovation already costs?
Having worked with homeowners across Chester, Knutsford, Alderley Edge, Prestbury and Wilmslow for over fifteen years, here is my honest answer.
What an interior designer actually does, and it is not choosing cushions
The most common misconception is that interior design is primarily about aesthetics. In reality, the most valuable part of what we do is almost invisible to the client.
Before I touch a single fabric sample or paint card, the work begins with spatial planning. Rethinking how a room actually functions. How people move through it. Where the light falls at different times of day. How storage can be built in without dominating. How every element will connect to every other element once the project is complete. This structural thinking prevents the single most expensive mistake homeowners make: buying beautiful pieces that do not work together, or starting a build and realising halfway through that the fundamental layout is wrong.
Then there is the management of a project that most people have never managed before. Coordinating architects, builders, joiners, electricians, tilers, upholsterers, curtain makers and furniture suppliers, all within a timeline and a budget, all while you are trying to live your normal life. For homeowners managing a renovation from a busy household, or from abroad, the project management element alone transforms what is typically a stressful and fragmented process into something genuinely smooth. You can read more about how Gaby manages projects on our process page.
The honest maths
Hada Interiors charges £96 per hour (£80 + VAT), with fixed project fees available for larger commissions. The initial consultation is paid, but the fee is refunded in full against your project costs if you proceed.
For a typical sitting room transformation in Cheshire, design fees might total £2,500 to £4,000. For a full floor or whole house commission, the fee depends on scope and is agreed in writing upfront with no surprises.
The financial case for using a designer is positive on almost every project above a certain scale. But the financial argument is actually the secondary one.

The real reason Cheshire homeowners hire an interior designer
Read the testimonials from Hada Interiors clients and a pattern emerges. Nobody says they saved money. They say Gaby listened. She understood how we actually live. The process was smooth and quick. I walk into the room and feel genuinely happy.
This is what a good interior designer provides: certainty. The confidence that every decision has been properly considered, every element is coherent, and the result will feel like you rather than a generic showroom. For homeowners in Prestbury or Alderley Edge investing £50,000 or more in a property that already matters deeply to them, that certainty is not a luxury. It is exactly what the investment requires.
When is it NOT worth hiring an interior designer?
Being honest means answering this too.
If you have a strong and clear vision, genuinely enjoy the research and decision making process, have plenty of time, and are working on a relatively small project with limited moving parts, you may be completely fine doing it yourself. Interior design is not a prerequisite for every renovation.
Where it becomes clearly worth it: any project involving structural changes or layout decisions, any project above £10,000/15,000 in total spend, any project where you are time poor or decision fatigued, any project where you want a guaranteed cohesive result rather than a series of individual choices that may or may not work together, and any project you are managing remotely. Take a look at our interior design services to understand the full scope of what is included.
Three questions worth asking yourself before you decide
Do you have the time to research, source, visit showrooms, coordinate trades and manage deliveries yourself? Do you have the design confidence to make irreversible decisions about flooring, joinery and structural layout with genuine certainty? And is the emotional cost of getting it wrong, living with a mistake in your home every single day, one you are comfortable carrying?
If the answer to any of these is no, then yes. It is worth it.
